Some students did not have time to correct all of their chapter 9 science review. Here are all the answers to pages 340-343. Remember, the test is tomorrow, Friday, 10-5-12.

15. Hold a north or south pole of the labeled magnet near the other magnets, one at a time. Like poles will repel, and unlike poles will attract.
16. Repeating the experiment will help make sure I get the same results each time. In this way, I can draw a valid conclusion.
17. The compass is not in Earth's magnetic field.
18. The compass will not work because the power lines create a magnetic field that attracts the compass.
19. When charged particles that cause auroras affect the magnetic field, the magnetic field can fluctuate, creating or disrupting electric currents in wires, causing blackouts.
20. An electromagnet would be more useful because an electromagnet can be turned off and can release the objects. It can also be made more or less powerful by controlling the number of coils or the amount of current.

9. The cord contains a wire made of a conductor wrapped in an insulator. The conductor provides path for the current to follow, and the insulator keeps the current inside the wire.
10. The magnetic field causes magnets to line up with Earth's magnetic poles. A compass has a freely-moving magnet. As it lines up, its north-seeking pole points to the direction of Earth's magnetic north pole.

Assignment
There will be test on Science chapter 9 on Friday 10-5-12. To help prepare, tonight's homework is to complete 11 vocabulary cards. The definitions are in the chapter, as well as in the glossary at the end of the book.
On the front of the card, write the word and your name and homeroom number. On the back, write the definition from the book. For some of the cards, we wrote additional definitions in our notebooks. You can write those definitions too, but they are not mandatory. The definition on the test will be the one from the book.

Chapter 8 science tests were returned today (Monday). Congratulations to all who did well! If you got a grade below a C, you can raise it to a C if you do the following:
Return the test tomorrow (Tuesday) with corrections and a parent signature. You can use your notes and the textbook to find the correct answers.
Remember, tests MUST be returned Tuesday, September 25, 2012, completely corrected and with a parent signature to raise your grade to a C.
I hope you take advantage of this opportunity to improve your score!

Assignment
There will be a test on Chapter 8 on Friday, 9-21-12. We will review in class on Wednesday, but Thursday is busy, so you will need to review for homework.
Be able to identify a simple, series, and paralell circuit.
Know all the vocabulary words in the chapter review.
Know the properties of static and current electricity.
Know the major electricty contributions of Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.
Know the differences and some examples of insulators and conductors.

Remember, your homework is to bring your signed permission slip for the Barnes and Noble field trip back to school tomorrow.
Also, I will be giving time in class to work on our science posters. NO EXCUSES will be accepted for not having yours with you tomorrow!
Four people have already turned them in: Harry, Annabella, Gio and Brian (all from room 52). I will have something else for you to do in class.

EXTRA CREDIT FOR MS. DANIELS
Tomorrow is September 11. This is a significant day in American history. For extra credit, find some information about this day in American history, and bring it to share with the class. It can be a book, article, photo, or information from the internet. You may also ask a grown up what they know about Sept. 11. If they give you information from their memory, just write down a couple of sentences and have the grown up sign it.
If you choose to do this extra credit, it must be brought to class on Tuesday, 9-11-12.

Tonight is back to school night for parents. Here is the schedule:
5:45 pm. Mrs. Lovie will meet with parents in the cafeteria. She has some important information to share, so please have your parents attend.
6:35 - 7:15 Rotation number 1.
7:20 - 8:00 Rotation number 2.
All fourth graders will meet in the cafeteria, not the homerooms. That way, all three teachers can talk to all the parents at the same time.
Remember, this evening is for parents, so students can stay at home.
